Books of the Bible

The Old Testament

Genesis: Creation, the story of Noah, Abraham

Exodus: The story of Moses and the Israelites escape from Egypt. The Ten Commandments appear in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5.

Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy are books of laws.

Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samual, 1 and 2 Kings and 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther are history books telling of the establishment of the kingdom of Israel. This includes the story of David.

Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon are books of poetry and wisdom.

Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi are prophets, individuals who were particularly attuned to God.

The New Testament

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the Gospels and they tell the story of Jesus. All we know about him is primarily in these four books.

Acts tells the story of the beginning of the church after Jesus ascended.

Paul is credited with writing Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon.

The other books of the New Testament are letters that circulated through the early churches. The last book, Revelation was a dream of John of Patmos about the end of time.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our   trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The   power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.

Amen.
