Lent Begins
He rises early to pray.
He steps into his sandals.
He lifts his outer garment over his shoulders, the one they will cast lots for.
He looks to the sunrise.
There will be 40 more
And then darkness
And THEN
He looks about at his friends still sleeping in the early morning
Like children curled in innocence.
Weary and hungry in a world that does not nurture them
Blind to the radical action that will be taken,
That will be needed
To set them free.
He looks at his hands and feet, scar-less now.
One of his flock stirs in his sleep and turns and looks at him with hollow eyes.
He feels “hosanna” “save us” pass between them.
Feels it like electricity sent from the beginning of time.
Feels it pierce his side.
He lifts his head, stands taller, straightens his spine, takes one step
And God’s prayer becomes action
And the journey to the cross begins.
Blessings
